A3 matte full-colour print showing colour scheme for HMS Prince of Wales in December 1941.

This suggested colour scheme has been developed by reference to numerous black & white photographs to determine the demarcations of the scheme and the relative tones and contrasts. In addition, once the number of paints present and the most likely tone of each was determined, these were compared to surviving colour cinefilm footage taken at Gibraltar in August 1941. Using this footage to study the hue of the colours observed, the authors were able to eliminate theoretical combinations of the authorised paints available to ships in the Royal Navy at this time.

The scheme presented is the conclusion of the study of both tonal contrast and hue from surviving black and white and colour images, using the colours and tones as they are now known to have been.

Sovereign Hobbies in collaboration with M Brown, S Carroll, R Dennis, EJ Forth and L Johnson.

Colour profiles are sent rolled in tubes, not folded. Whilst the quality of the printing is high and the colours illustrative without being misleading, we caution that some difference in colour fidelity is expected as compared to the recommended Colourcoats paints.

Solid pigments and flattening agent will tend to separate from the carrier solvent if sat still for long periods of time, so we strongly recommend thorough mixing before use.

Colourcoats can be sprayed with a suitable airbrush or brush painted. When brush painting multiple thinned coats are recommended with sable brushes.

The recommended thinner is Colourcoats Thinners specially formulated for superior drying times and reduced odour. If necessary Colourcoats can be thinned with  standard quality solvent thinners or cellulose thinners for rapid drying.
