A full-colour partial facsimile copy of the 1945 edition of Confidential Book 3098 entitled "THE CAMOUFLAGE OF SHIPS AT SEA".

This publication simplified and updated the original May 1943 edition and described in great detail the principles of sea-going camouflage both theoretically and practically. For this product, we have not replicated the theoretical pages of the 1945 edition (they are however contained in our 1943 edition facsimile) and instead only reproduced the pages giving practical direction as to the painting of ships and boats to the standard camouflage schemes.

As part of this simplification from the 1943 edition, encompassing the Standard Camouflage Schemes first promulgated in C.A.F.O. 2269 on 12th October 1944 entitled "Camouflage of H.M. Ships and Vessels - Standardization", the 1945 edition of  CB3098 came with a set of 7 black and white diagrams using hatching and cross hatching to denote placement of colour. In addition, Diagram 1 was used to illustrate both Schemes A and B. We have reproduced these in full-colour showing Schemes A and B on separate versions of Diagram 1 in this facsimile using the latest research on the true appearance of Royal Navy paint colours.

The document is 18 pages long with detailed painting instructions in written format for use in applying the schemes covering topics such as countershading and lining-out the schemes, as well as providing guidance on deck colours and Pendant number colours.

The Schemes cover the following types of vessels:

Battleships

Cruisers

Ships with flight decks (i.e. aircraft carriers)

Destroyers

Fleet minesweepers

Depot ships

Landing ships,

Convoy escorts

Coastal Force boats

Landing craft

Submarines

Royal Fleet Auxiliaries and other vessels not included above

The Scheme A included within is possibly most famous for its association with the British Pacific Fleet.

This document superseded the May 1943 edition of CB3098

Solid pigments and flattening agent will tend to separate from the carrier solvent if sat still for long periods of time, so we strongly recommend thorough mixing before use.

Colourcoats can be sprayed with a suitable airbrush or brush painted. When brush painting multiple thinned coats are recommended with sable brushes.

The recommended thinner is Colourcoats Thinners specially formulated for superior drying times and reduced odour. If necessary Colourcoats can be thinned with  standard quality solvent thinners or cellulose thinners for rapid drying.
