Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless - Gallery
We’re very pleased to have been allowed to share Richard Carrick’s lovely 1/18th scale Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless, modelled in French markings for service in Indochina in 1947. In real life, these aircraft were approaching the end of their service lives and were heavily weathered.
Richard spent almost two years on this model, starting with the Merit International SBD-3/4 kit but with extensive remodeling and modifications both to add details and to post-date the aircraft to an SBD-5. These modifications were scratch built and included making a new windscreen, flaps and dive brakes and their actuating mechanisms, a new interior, new 3D printed wheels, twin 0.30 cal machine guns, a full engine and all ancillaries under the cowling, new bomb racks and then the model was fully skinned in pewter sheet with rivet details punched in. We’re also very happy to share that Richard chose to use Colourcoats paints in finishing his model, on account of our accuracy.
Richard’s Dauntless achieved a Commended award at the IPMS Nationals at Telford over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of November this year.
